American politician of Indian descent, Zohran Kwame Mamdani, is the current favourite of the NYC. The 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani has defeated Andrew Cuomo to win the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City. The 32-year-old Ugandan-born Indian American has now become the first South Asian candidate to win a major-party primary for NYC Mayor.
However, the path to City Hall is far from clear, as he has to face the Republican challenger in the general election on November 4, 2025. Zohran, the son of postcolonial theorist Mahmood Mamdani and acclaimed filmmaker, Mira Nair, began his political career in 2015. He is the first Muslim to be associated with the Democratic Socialists of America, following his defeat of the former governor, Andrew Cuomo.
