Meet Zohran Mamdani’s Parents, Mira Nair, Mahmood Mamdani As He Sworn In As New York City’s Mayor

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026. At 34, Zohran made history as the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in generations. The formal oath was administered in a private ceremony around 12:15 a.m. at the decommissioned Old City Hall subway station, a location chosen to emphasize the importance of public transit. New York Attorney General, Letitia James administered the oath. Besides becoming the first Muslim and youngest mayor of NYC, Zohran Mamdani also registered another first.

Zohran became the first to hold the office after taking the oath using a Quran. He utilised his grandfather’s copy of the religious text and a 200-year-old edition from the New York Public Library. Zohran’s wife, Rama Duwaji, held out the Quran over which he took his oath of office, as reported by the BBC. A ceremonial swearing-in took place at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall, overseen by Senator Bernie Sanders, followed by a public block party. Zohran Mamdani’s proud parents, Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, were also present at the ceremony. Here’s everything we know about the couple.
