There are 22 major languages in India which are recognized in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. This number ranges from 69 to 72 depending on the languages taught in schools. Including the languages and dialects operated on the radio network, this number is 146. According to the 2011 census, there are 1,369 mother tongues in India.
