Zohran Kwame Mamdani is leading America’s political front as he is one of the unexpected candidates fighting for the 2025 New York City mayoral election. Zohran, who began his political journey as a housing counsellor, is representing Queens. In 2020, Zohra was elected to the New York State Assembly for the 36th District, becoming the first South Asian woman to hold the position.
Born in Uganda to an Indian family, Zohran’s father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a professor at Columbia University. On the other hand, his mother, Mira Nair, is a well-known Indian-American filmmaker. With films like Monsoon Wedding, Salaam Bombay, The Namesake and many others, Mira is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers across the globe.
